PTA President’s Message, June 2017

It was June, and the world smelled of roses.

Dear Lowell Families,

Another year of school is almost over!  I’m sure it seems like only yesterday since your children started classes last August.  I am so proud of what the Lowell PTA has achieved this year with your help!  Our PTA membership is 1,074 people strong – parents, students and all of our teachers.  We are the only elementary school with more than 1,000 members in all of Long Beach!

The passion and involvement of Lowell PTA members is absolutely amazing.  Our incredible PTA committee chairs organized over 50 events for our Lowell students and community this year, ranging from Pumpkin Carving Night to the Variety Show, the Summer Camp Fair and Authors & Illustrators Night to the Book Fairs, Donut and Muffin Mornings to Pizza & Movie Nights, Skate Nights, Orientations, the Science Fair, Career Day, Earth Day, Food Finders and many more.

The financial generosity of our Lowell family is nothing short of astonishing.  From passive fundraising (Amazon Smile, Box Tops) to Dining for Dollars, Jog-A-Thon to Membership, Spring Auction (the first in 3 years!) to Carnival, we exceeded our financial goals by raising over $170,000!  The money you raised allows our kids to experience Meet the Masters and the Green Team, music programs, special assemblies, field trips and more.  We also enhanced our classroom technology by purchasing Chromebooks, classroom projectors, iPads, MacBooks, printers, headphones, and the software, supplies and training to make it all work for our kids.  Bravo!

Together, we worked to educate our parent community to better serve our children.  Our speaker series topics included exciting Measure E changes coming to our school, college savings advice, advocacy and volunteer training, and our own Dr. Brennan on how to get your child ready to learn.

The achievements of our Lowell community are recognized throughout Long Beach – our Lowell PTA was one of only three recognized as the best in the Long Beach Unified School District!

It has been my great privilege and pleasure to serve as your PTA president this year.  To everyone on the Executive Board, to all the event chairs, to the teachers, to Mr. Lawson, to our amazing Lowell administrative staff, to all of the PTA members and volunteers — I can’t say thank you enough for your hard work and great participation this year.  You are why we achieve so much for our school and our children. Have a great summer!

See you at school

Principal’s Message, March 2017

Lowell Families,

The following was written by our very own Mr. Brunner, 3rd Grade teacher and Chess Club Supervisor. The Chess Club truly embodies what we look for in our students here at Lowell: patience, integrity, honesty, goal setting, and kindness.

Lester “Dow” Lawson

Lowell Elementary School Chess Club

Chess may have been around for over 1,500 years, but, at Lowell Elementary School, it dates back to 1992. The Lowell Chess Club, originally, began as a lunchtime activity for third-graders in Mr. Brunner’s class, but quickly expanded to a weekly before-school meeting for all grades. Students learn to plan ahead, looking at not only their current positions on the board, but, also at many moves further along. In chess it doesn’t matter your age; it only matters how carefully you craft your game. In the Lowell Chess Club students definitely learn the value of seeing the big idea, as well as learn to look for changes over time; even if those changes only take place on a board full of squares.
